The next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026
Every 5 years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) counts every person and household in Australia through the Census. Information from the Census helps governments, businesses and community groups plan for schools, health care, transport and infrastructure.

We can’t do the Census without our temporary field workforce. They collect the data that helps us all understand more about Australia and how it’s changing.

We are now hiring over 16,000 Field Officers
There are Field Officer jobs available in your area, and in most parts of Australia.

• Field Officers are the local face of the Census.
• They deliver Census letters and forms, answer questions from the public and follow up with households that have not yet responded.
• Applications open from 20 April 2026.
• To be considered in the first round of applications, we encourage people to submit their application by 18 May 2026.

• Census data helps businesses and governments make important decisions that directly impacts local communities. It is also used to help plan local services for individuals, families, and communities.
• Field Officers are the local face of the Census. They are crucial in collecting Census data.
• They deliver Census letters and forms, answer questions from the public and follow up with households who have not yet completed their form.
• Field Officer jobs are available in locations all over Australia.
  
  
• No prior experience is required to become a Field Officer.
  
  
• The ABS is looking for a range of people who:
  ƒ can work within a team and independently
  ƒ can communicate sensitively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds and communities
  ƒ have knowledge of their local area.
  
  
• Field Officers will earn $31.19 per hour (inclusive of 25% casual loading), plus superannuation.
  
  
• Field Officers will work flexible hours across a mix of weekdays, evenings and weekends.
